Precision calculations

Particle physics strives to understand the fundamental building blocks of nature. The masses of the elementary particles, the exact strength of the forces between them and the existence of other yet undiscovered particles play a key role in the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to its appearance today. These questions are addressed at the LHC experiments, culminating in the recent discovery of the Higgs boson. However, to fully exploit the scientific potential of this machine, experimentalists need precise predictions from theory in order to dig out signals of new particles and phenomena from the bulk of known physics. Precise predictions are obtained by calculating higher-order corrections in perturbation theory.
